Mind Your Mom! | May 2023 Homeward Bound Newsletter

Mind Your Mom!

Just about every May, I sit down to write Homeward Bound; I write about Mom’s Day. And why not… it is a very special day for very special people.

My Mom used to tell me, seemingly repeatedly, to do this and do that, not to do this and not to do that.  ALL, I recall, very valuable advice. Looking back on it all these many years later, I can say she was, and still is, a very wise woman.

Time reveals, in fact, just about every caring Mother is a Wise Woman.  I can see why we carve out a special day each year to acknowledge Moms. So here is a shout-out to all Mom’s – Happy Mother’s Day!!

My birthday is on May 27, and it always falls close to Mother’s Day.  So I take the opportunity to travel to Texas to visit Mom and the family.  In that way, she gets double the hugs and love from my Sister and me.

Unfortunately, My Mom’s Mom is no longer here.  I am sure that makes her very sad this time of year.  I am sure some reading this can relate and have similar stories.  For ALL those whose Mom is no longer with us, may you remember the best about them. In addition to that, there are also many who never knew their Mom due to unfortunate circumstances. I bet someone played that role in their life and they too deserve a Happy Mother’s Day!

Regardless, we can celebrate this Mother’s Day knowing Moms both here and no longer here are special in more ways than we can count.

Especially the Moms who are sitting right now by their Child’s hospital bed not too far from where I type this…

You may recall my team and I are on a mission to raise $5,000 for Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Foundation of Miami (NCHF) in 2020. We do that by donating a portion of our income from home sales to this very worthy cause.

Right now, there are kids at (NCHF) who are trying to beat the Cancer Monster and other nasty debilitating diseases. Children’s is one of the best non-profit hospitals at treating kids, even leading the way in early diagnosis of autism and recovery of spinal cord injury.  The Mom’s with kids being treated at Children’s are most likely NOT thinking about their special day this month. They are simply just being “Mom” doing what a real loving Mom does. God bless them for it.

You may know someone considering buying or selling a home. If so, please refer them to our team. Not only will they benefit from our award-winning service, a very worthy cause will benefit as well.

Just give me a call or pass on my number. Thank you for giving this some thought.

A core value at our company is “the size of the hole you give through is directly proportionate to the size of the hole you receive through.”

As part of our Go Serve Big Mission, we proudly give back to those in our community who need help the most. In this case, the amazing kids with amazing Moms at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Foundation of Miami.

My Mom told me to give all I could, no matter what I was doing. Many years later, I get to repeat it here and do all I can to help you, your referrals and try and help Children’s Hospital continue their leading-edge care and keep the costs to those families to a minimum.

Thank you in advance for your referrals!

Why I Give to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital:

I have been a proud supporter of the Children’s Miracle Health Network for over four decades. My relationship with them began when I was a junior manager in the hospitality industry. The company I worked for, Marriott Hotels and Resorts, had a very close working relationship with CMNH. Throughout my career with Marriott, I was continuously involved with the Miracle Network in multiple capacities. Whether it was spearheading their annual fundraising drive every year, hosting glittering donor functions, or working directly with the local community hospital, I had numerous opportunities to witness the passion they bring to their work, and the amazing and positive impact they have on families’ lives. When it came time to start giving back to the local Florida community, I didn’t have to spend a lot of time thinking about what organization I wanted to sponsor. I found out about the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital when I asked about CMN hospitals in the South Florida area.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is South Florida’s only licensed specialty hospital exclusively for children, with more than 650 attending physicians. It made me feel good that the professionals at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital know that taking care of the health of children goes beyond treating injuries and diseases. Sometimes, just talking to someone who understands, helps more than any medicine. As we all know, children are more vulnerable than adults, and while they don’t understand some things adults do, they feel everything. That’s why knowing the way to communicate with children correctly is an extremely important part of the treatment. The pros at the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital know exactly how to win the trust of children, keeping their hope alive for a better future. That’s why the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is an organization that I am proud to support.

Patient of the Month: Jaxon

When Dara gave birth to Jaxon, he had a ridge along his forehead. With more testing, Jaxon was diagnosed with craniosynostosis of the metopic suture, and he would need surgery immediately to correct the anomaly because the irregular shape of the skull was pushing on the brain. The family also determined that Jaxon also had a rare genetic disorder that would require ongoing care. After extensive research on where to take their son for the best care, Dara and her husband, Cliff, were proud to choose Nicklaus Children's in their own backyard. Thanks to the care provided by a team of specialists led by Dr. Chad Perlyn and Dr. Sanjiv Bhatia, Jaxon is celebrating his seventh birthday in May.

Your support matters for patients like Jaxon. Please donate today!

Nicklaus Children’s Acquires Palm Beach and Treasure Coast Region in Growing Partnership with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is expanding its footprint in South Florida as a result of a growing partnership with Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals. As of 2023, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is now the official CMN member hospital for Palm Beach and the Treasure Coast, which includes Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Okeechobee and Indian River counties.

The territory expansion will bring more fundraising opportunities for Nicklaus Children’s Hospital through CMN’s partners and programs in Palm Beach and the Treasure Coast. Now, all CMN donations collected by partner organizations in those five counties will stay local, benefiting the care of patients of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, and its outpatient network. Fundraising campaigns take place throughout the year and partners include Costco, Walmart, Sam’s Club, Publix, Ace Hardware, Panda Express, IHOP, RE/MAX and Marriott, plus many more. Programmatic partners include Dance Marathon, Play Yellow, Extra Life, and English and Spanish language radiothons in collaboration with local radio stations. See all partners at nicklauschildrens.org/cmn.

Nicklaus Children’s Hospital has been a member hospital of CMN since 1989, serving Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties. With this growth to five more counties, Nicklaus Children’s becomes the member hospital for eight counties across South Florida.

“We are delighted to expand our reach more broadly throughout Florida and look forward to working with all of our amazing partners and programs in the five new counties to raise essential funds for Nicklaus Children’s,” said Matthew A. Love, president and CEO at Nicklaus Children’s Health System. “Nicklaus Children’s is proud to be a longstanding member hospital of such a nationally renowned organization like Children’s Miracle Network, and we are so excited about the potential to make an even greater impact in our region so every child has the best chance for a happy, healthy future.”

“We are thrilled to now partner with Nicklaus Children’s Hospital as they expand their reach into Palm Beach and the Treasure Coast,” said Alex Calderon, General Manager at 99.5 La Ley and 96.9 Fiesta. “Nicklaus Children’s is a leader in pediatric care and we are confident that, together, we will make a remarkable impact on children in the region.”

Nicklaus Children’s is the only pediatric hospital exclusively for kids in South Florida and and was tied for first in the state for pediatric excellence by U.S. News and World Report in 2022. Each year, Nicklaus Children’s serves nearly 500,000 children and continues to build on its 73-year legacy of delivering amazing patient care.
